Career
Charlotte Owen started her career in 2015, working for a month in Brussels for Jacqueline Foster, deputy leader of the Conservative Party in the European Parliament.
The accuracy of her stated career history has been disputed, with some claiming that she exaggerated her seniority and time at 10 Downing Street. It has been claimed that she never worked in the Policy Unit.
In 2016, Owen interned for four months at strategic communications consultancy Portland Communications. In 2017, she worked as a constituency intern for Conservative MP William Wragg.
Later that year, she worked as a parliamentary intern for Boris Johnson for six months before becoming a parliamentary assistant to Alok Sharma for seven months.
On 9 June 2023, it was announced that Owen would be awarded a lifetime peerage following Boris Johnson’s resignation. The decision was criticised as Owen was seen as inexperienced and had not made a significant contribution to British politics or society.
On 12 July 2023, Owen was created Baron Owen of Alderley Edge, in Alderley Edge, County of Cheshire.
She sits in the House of Lords as a Conservative peer. At 30, she became the youngest member of the House of Lords until Carmen Smith, Baroness Smith of Llanfaes, was appointed at the age of 27 in 2024.
In her maiden speech to the House of Lords on 14 November, Owen said she wanted to spend her time scrutinising legislation on new technology.
