Early life and education
Choe Ryong-hae was born on January 15, 1950 in Sinchon County, South Hwanghae, North Korea. He was born to parents Choe Hyon and Kim Cheol-ho.
His father, Choe Hyon, fought alongside Kim Il Sung in the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army and later served as North Korea’s Defense Minister. It is unclear whether he grew up with his siblings, but the media does not know their names.

In 2010, Choe had a significant advancement in his career, being promoted to the KPA General Department and appointed to the WPK Secretariat, Central Military Commission and Politburo.
He also became secretary in charge of military affairs. In the following years, he continued to gain influence, representing Kim Jong Un in diplomatic activities and being appointed to the party’s Central Military Commission in 2017.
