Career
While in college, Powell joined the Reserve Officers Training Corps and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army. He was assigned to the 48th Infantry Regiment as a platoon leader in West Germany. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam as an advisor to South Vietnam from 1962-1963.
In 1968, he served as assistant chief of staff for operations for the 23rd Infantry Division. He was even awarded the Soldier’s Medal for valor after surviving a helicopter crash and also rescuing three others from the wreckage.
After these trips, when Colin returned to the United States, he enrolled at George Washington University, where he graduated with an MBA in 1971. He even participated in the White House Fellowship Program from 1972 to 1973.
He even attended the National War College in Washington from 1975 to 1976. He even served at Fort Carson, Colorado, and later became a senior military aide to Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger. He even served as the Deputy National Counselor of the United States in 1987.
Powell’s final military assignment was from 1989 to 1993. During that tenure, he served as the 12th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He became the first African American and the youngest officer to serve in that position.
Powell resigned in 1993. In 2001, he was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the 65th Secretary of State. He joined the Silicon Valley venture in 2005 after retiring from the military. Powell has been vocal about his dislike of the Republican Party.
