Powell began his career in college; he joined the Reserve Officers Training Corps and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Army. He was soon assigned to the 48th Infantry Regiment as a platoon leader in West Germany. He successfully completed a tour in Vietnam as a South Vietnamese advisor from 1962-1963. Meanwhile, in 1968, he served as assistant chief of staff for operations for the 23rd Infantry Division. He received the Soldier’s Cross for valor after surviving a helicopter crash and also rescuing three others from the wreckage.
