Critics say she is “not ready” for the demands of fame

Chappell Roan’s sudden cancellation of two European tour dates left fans disappointed and out of pocket, as they were left behind due to unforeseen scheduling conflicts.

In the midst of her busy “Midwest Princess Tour,” the 26-year-old pop singer regretfully announced on Thursday that she has canceled her upcoming shows in Paris and Amsterdam.

In addition to canceling the shows originally scheduled for September 3 and 4, Roan’s show in Berlin on August 31 has been rescheduled for September 23.

The “Good Luck, Babe!” hitmaker said in a statement on X, formerly Twitter, “I’m so sorry and disappointed 🙁 I promise I’ll be back.”

“I’m so heartbroken [broken heart emoji]”, she added. “Thanks for understanding.”

Due to scheduling conflicts, I have had to make the extremely difficult decision to cancel the Paris and Amsterdam shows. I have rescheduled the Berlin show for September 23rd. Fans on Reddit were quick to speculate that the change in her tour dates could be due to her upcoming appearance at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, which will be held on September 11.

They found her decision to reschedule “shocking”, suggesting she was prioritizing the awards show over her loyal fan base.

One person wrote, “[It] It feels like a slap in the face to the fans who supported her and bought tickets long before she became this famous.”

They continued, “Especially if the reason for the last minute cancellation was really because of the VMAs. I love her, but this is not a good idea.”

Another agreed, commenting, “I think this is just an unfortunate situation where you can watch as priorities change. I understand wanting to capitalize on her growing success and opportunities but this is a huge blow to the fans who have always followed her regardless of follower count.”

A third Redditor responded to this thread as follows: “[I] feel like this will detract from her performance at the VMAs [to be honest]. Although I love Chappell Roan very much, my heart goes out to the fans who were disappointed right now.”

“I’m not a regular attendee of live concerts so I’m not 100% sure about the etiquette, but my first thought when I heard this news was ‘surely the only acceptable reason to cancel shows on such short notice is something very serious and unavoidable like illness or death?'” they added.

Meanwhile, on X, user @reputationfan13 wrote that perhaps Roan wasn’t fully prepared for the level of fame she had achieved.

“She wasn’t ready for the level of fame she has now,” they wrote. “She is incredibly talented, but if you want to get to the next level, you also need self-control and organizational skills, which she seems to struggle with.”

Another user, @faithforgottan, suggested that Roan should learn from Taylor Swift when it comes to public relations, writing: “[The] Rule number one is always keep the fans happy.”

In response to fans’ frustration over canceled concerts, Roan opted to issue refunds. However, the decision, like some of her recent actions, was not well received by fans.

Last week, the “My Kink Is Karma” singer shared her feelings on TikTok about fans invading her privacy.

“I don’t care about abuse, harassment, stalking or anything else that is normal for famous or less famous people,” she said.

The “Hot to Go” singer added, “I don’t care that it’s normal. I don’t care that this type of crazy behavior comes with the job, the career field that I chose.”

“That doesn’t mean it’s okay, that doesn’t mean it’s normal. That doesn’t mean I want it, that doesn’t mean I like it,” Roan said.
