During his time at the University of Alabama, he was named an All-SEC Scholar and was a two-time SEC Scholar-Athlete honoree.

He graduated with a degree in commerce and business administration and received his master’s degree in business administration in 1995.

Career

After completing his studies, Dabo Swinney joined the Crimson Tide as a full-time coach. He resigned when head coach Mike DuBose and his backroom staff were fired in 2001. As a result, Dabo Swinney received a contract payment from the club for the remainder of the year.

Rich Wingo, his former coach, offered him a job at Birmingham-based AIG Baker Real Estate. He accepted the job offer and stayed with the company for two years.

His former coach at Alabama, Tommy Bowden, offered him the assistant coaching position at Clemson and he accepted.

In 2003, he took over from Rick Stockstill as Recruiting Coordinator.

Dabo Swinney was named interim head coach at Clemson after Tommy Bowden resigned after just six games in the 2008 season.

When he took over, the team was struggling in ninth place, but they did well, going 3-3 in their first six games. Dabo Swinney was chosen over other candidates like Clemson defensive coordinator Vic Koenning and former South Carolina head coach Brad Scott, because of his exceptional recruiting skills.

Dabo Swinney was given a vote of confidence by athletic director Terry Don Phillips and given the official role as head coach after a series of outstanding results, including a 31–14 victory over South Carolina in the annual rivalry game.

Dabo Swinney proved his critics wrong in his first season as Clemson won the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship with a 9–5 (6–2 ACC) and 6–2 ACC record.

Clemson finished the regular season with a 6–6 record (4–4 in the ACC) in 2010, which was not a good year for him. Clemson was also defeated by the Florida State Seminoles.

Fans targeted Swinney and sporting director Terry Don Phillips, who wanted them fired. However, Phillips supported him for another season and kept him, much to the fans’ dismay.

Clemson made another risky move when they hired Chad Morris, a high school coach, as offensive coordinator.

It was also a wise decision as he implemented a new high-speed offensive style into Clemson’s games, helping the team set many records.

Dabo Swinney led Clemson to its third consecutive 10-win season in 2013, including a 38–35 victory over Georgia.

Dabo Swinney also set a Clemson football record with 32 wins in three years, the most by any coach in school history. The Tigers won their third Orange Bowl and their first BCS bowl victory when they defeated seventh-ranked Ohio State in the 2014 Orange Bowl.

Dabo Swinney continued to break records in 2015, finishing the season with a 14-1 record, an ACC championship, and a trip to the national championship game, where his team was defeated by Alabama.

He led his team to a 45-37 win over No. 8 North Carolina in the ACC championship game and a 37-17 win over No. 4 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl.
