Early life and education

Daddy Lumba, who will turn 59 in 2023, was born on September 29, 1964, in a village called Nsuta Amangoase in the Sekire Central District near Mampong in the Ashanti region of Ghana.

He is the only son of his parents, both of whom were teachers. When Lumba was still a child, his father, Owoahene Kwadwo Fosuh, died and he was taken care of by his mother, Comfort Gyamfi, popularly known as Ama Saah.

She was also a teacher and a devout Christian who introduced Lumba to gospel music. Her death in Kumasi in 2001 was a devastating blow to Lumba because she was everything to him.

Aside from being the only son of his parents, he also has a half-brother named Ernest “Owoahene” Nana Acheampong.

From 1983 to 1985, Lumba attended Juaben High School, where he served as the school choir leader. He formed his first musical group, the Lumba Brothers, with his friends Yaw and Kwabena and his girlfriend Theresa Abebrese.

They performed at school events and local shows, gaining some fame. After completing secondary education, Rumba traveled to Germany with the help of Theresa, who already lived in Germany, in search of greener pastures.

Later, Lumba married Akosua Serwaa, a Ghanaian woman living in Germany. They have nine children and are still married today.

Daddy Lumba’s music career began in Germany where he met another Ghanaian musician, Ernest Nana Acheampong, who formed a band with a white man called “Talking Dreams”.

They formed a new band, also called Lumba Brothers, and released their first album, Also known as Akwantuo Mu 1989.

In 2014, he sued a young musician named Daddy Lumba Junior for claiming to be his son and imitating his style and sound.

Lumba accused him of impersonation and infringement of his intellectual property rights. The case was settled out of court in 2018, with Lumba Jr. agreeing to change his name to Anokye Supremo and apologize to Lumba.

Sadly, Anokye Supremo passed away in 2019 from a brain tumor.

In 2015, he released a single titled Yentie Obiaa, Some interpreted this as a political endorsement of then-President of Ghana John Mahama, who adopted the phrase as his slogan.

Lumba denied having any political leanings and said the song was dedicated to all those who work hard and don’t listen to the naysayers. He also said he was not paid by the president or his party to write the song.

In 2017, he was accused of using witchcraft (black magic) to kill his friend and colleague, Nana Acheampong, who was reportedly ill and hospitalized at the time.

Lumba refuted the baseless and malicious allegation and said he had no reason to harm Nana Acheampong as he considered him a brother. He also visited Nana in the hospital and prayed for his recovery.

In 2018, a Ghanaian woman, Mary Acheampong, who claimed to be his wife, sued him for divorce and division of property. She accused Lumba of abandoning her and their four children in Germany and marrying another Ghanaian woman.

Lumba denied ever marrying her and said she was just his girlfriend and the mother of his child. He also said he supported her and their child financially and emotionally. The case is still pending in court.
