Early life and education
Danis Goulet was born in La Ronge, Canada on April 7, 1977. Her father, Keith Napoleon Goulet, an MLA who spoke fluent Nehinuwehin (Cree), grew up hunting, fishing and gathering in the Cree village of Cumberland House.
Dennis’ mother, Linda May Hemingway, holds a position in the Department of Education at First Nations University.
One of her siblings is Tamar Goulet. Before studying at the Canadian Film Centre in Toronto, Denis Goulet National Film School Winnipeg Filmmaking class.
Profession
Danis Goulet started working in the film industry as an extra in a CBC miniseries about the life of Chief Big Bear in 1998. Her passion for filmmaking grew and led her to attend a filmmaking workshop in New York, where she made her first short film.
Recognizing her talent, she directed Rotation In 2004, the film won the prestigious Special Jury Award for Best Short Film at the Canadian Aboriginal Film Festival.
Throughout the 21st century, Danis Goulet has been active in the film industry, directing several short films and documentaries, such as Division by zero (2006), wapaweka (2010), barefoot (2012), and Awakening (2013). The film tells the story of a Cree mother’s extraordinary efforts to rescue her daughter from a public residential school.
Night Raider It has received widespread critical acclaim and numerous honors, including the prestigious Grand Prix from the Montreal New Film Festival and the Discovery Award from the Directors Guild of Canada.
