Early life and education
David Keith McCallum was born in Glasgow, Scotland on September 19, 1933. He was raised by his parents, David McCallum Sr. and Dorothy Dorman, in a modest but loving home.
When he was three years old, his father became the concertmaster of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the family moved to London. At the beginning of World War II, he was evacuated back to Scotland and lived with his mother in Gattocharn on the shores of Loch Lomond.
McCallum won a scholarship to University College School, Hampstead, London, where he played oboe, and his parents encouraged him to prepare for a career in music.
