West was drafted 24th overall by the Boston Celtics in the 2004 NBA draft. He struggled with injuries that season and played only 39 games in total. He was named the starting point guard the following season in 2005.

West has faced many hardships throughout his life and was addicted to drugs during his teenage years. He has been to rehab several times. He was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2008.
