Destiny 2
Destiny 2 is a free online first-person shooter developed by Bungie. It originally launched as a paid game for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows in 2017, and transitioned to a free-to-play model called “New Light” on October 1, 2019. The game is expanding its platforms to include Stadia in November 2019, and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in December 2020. Bungie took over publishing rights from Activision on December 31, 2018, marking a major shift for the series.
“Destiny 2” is set in the “mythical science fiction” world and provides a multiplayer shared world environment with RPG elements. Players can participate in PvE (Player vs. Environment) and PvP (Player vs. Player) game types. PvE content includes story missions, three-player “Strikes,” six-player raids, and a free-roam patrol mode that includes public events and interactions with NPCs. PvP features an objective-based deathmatch game mode.
In the game, players take on the role of the Guardians, defenders of Earth’s last safe city, using the power of light to protect humanity from various alien races and looming dark threats. Destiny 2 has released an expansion pack that continues the story and introduces new content.
The first year included two small expansions, Curse of Osiris and Warmind, while the second year kicked off with a major expansion called Forsaken. Subsequent releases such as Shadowkeep (October 2019) and Beyond Light (Year 4) brought significant changes to the game, with the latter introducing the power of darkness.
Year four marked a major overhaul, with much of the game’s content from the previous three years being placed in the Destiny content library. New expansion packs such as “The Witch Queen” and “Fall of Light” are planned to follow “Beyond Light” and bring an end to the “Light and Dark Saga”.
Destiny 2 launched to generally positive reviews, praising its improved story, gameplay, visuals, exploration, multiplayer features, and public events. However, opinions are divided on certain aspects such as weapon reclassification, Leviathan raids, and new game modes. The game received multiple award nominations and awards, including recognition at the 2017 Game Awards and the Game Critics Awards.
