After graduating from college, Taurasi was recruited by the Phoenix Mercury as the top overall pick in 2004. Despite a losing record the previous year, Taurasi made an impact by scoring 22 points in her debut and averaging 17 points for the season. Although her team did not make the playoffs, Taurasi was named an All-Star and earned Rookie of the Year honors.
The following season, she averaged 16 points per game despite an ankle injury. She became an All-Star, but her team still failed to make the playoffs. The following season, a new coach and another rookie superstar were added to the roster, creating high expectations for the Mercury.
In 2006, Taurasi had a historic season with the Mercury. She performed well under Westhead’s coaching, leading the league in scoring and breaking the single-season scoring record. Taurasi averaged about 25 points per game and set a WNBA record with 121 three-pointers. Despite her accomplishments, the Mercury did not make the playoffs.
The Mercury made the WNBA playoffs in 2007, winning the Finals against the Detroit Shock. They were successful again in 2009, with Taurasi being named WNBA Finals MVP. She is one of only two players to win the regular season scoring title, regular season MVP, WNBA championship, and Finals MVP in the same season.
