Early life and education
Diane Abbott was born in Paddington, London, England, on September 27, 1953. Her parents were of Jamaican descent and she grew up with her brother, Hugh Abbott, under the care of their loving parents, Reginald Abbott and Julia Abbott.
Diane attended Harrow District Girls’ School, a grammar school, and later studied further at Newnham College, Cambridge. There she majored in history and completed her degree in 1973 with second-class honors.
Career
In 1976, Abbott became a member of the Labor Party and later joined Westminster City Council in 1982. During her time with the Labor Party’s Black movement in 1983, she actively campaigned for increase political representation for African, Caribbean and Asian communities. After former Labor MP Ernie Roberts was ousted, Abbott won a seat in Parliament in 1987.
Abbott has actively advocated for a variety of causes, such as race relations, civil liberties and social justice. She also held positions on a number of parliamentary committees, including the Treasury Select Committee and the Foreign Affairs Select Committee.
