Early life
Richard Wayne Van Dyke was born on December 13, 1925, in West Plains, Missouri, United States. Although born in West Plains, he spent most of his childhood in Danville, Illinois. His mother, Hazel Victoria, was a stenographer.
While his father Loren Wayne Van Dyke was a salesman. His parents had two children, his older brother, Jerry Van Dyke, was an actor and appeared on The Dick Van Dyke Show.
As a young man, Van Dyke considered a career in the ministry, although his keen interest in drama in high school convinced him to become a professional entertainer. He taught Sunday school at the Presbyterian Church. He was an elder at the church and also read theologians.

Career
Radio and stage performances
Van Dyke was a radio DJ in the late 40s on WDAN in Danville, Illinois. He was later persuaded to form a comedy duo called ‘Eric and Van – The Merry Mutes’ by Phil Erickson, a mime performer.
They then moved to Atlanta, Georgia to perform in a local television show of original plays and musicals called ‘The Merry Mutes’ in the early 1950s. Van Dyke made his Broadway debut in The Girls Against the Boys and starred in Bye Bye Birdie as Albert Peterson.

The group toured extensively. In 1961, Bye Bye Birdie won four Tony Awards, including a Best Supporting Actor Tony for Van Dyke. He also appeared in the lead role in the first Broadway production of The Music Man in 1980.
Television
Van Dyke started out with WDSU Orleans Channel 6, NBC television as a stand-up comedian, and later as a comedy host. He first appeared with Dennis James on James’ Chance of a Lifetime on television in 1954.
He appeared on ABC’s The Pat Boone Chevy Showroom and NBC’s The Polly Bergen Show, earning him a seven-year contract with the network. Van Dyke hosted the CBS sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show, playing a comedy writer named Rob Petrie.
The series won four Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series and he personally won three Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. 1971-1974: He hosted The New Dick Van Dyke Show on local television and was nominated for a Golden Globe.
He also provided his voice for Hanna Barbera’s animated series ‘Scooby-Doo Meets Dick Van Dyke’ in 1973. In 1974, he was nominated for an Emmy for his role as an alcoholic businessman in the film The Morning After.
In 1976, he returned to Sketch Comedy, but the show was canceled after 3 months, but he was still awarded an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series. He appeared mainly in films or television series in the next decade such as Matlock, Airwolf and The Golden Girls.
