Richard Wayne Van Dyke was born on December 13, 1925 in The West Plains of Missouri, United States. Regardless of being born in West Plains, he spent most of his childhood in Danville, Illinois. Her mother Hazel Victoria was a stenographer.
While his father Loren Wayne Van Dyke is a Salesman. His parents had two children, the eldest, Jerry Van Dyke, who was an actor and appeared on The Dick Van Dyke Show.

Radio and stage performances
Van Dyke was a radio DJ in the late 40s on WDAN in Danville, Illinois. He was then persuaded to form a comedy duo called ‘Eric and Van – The Merry Mutes’ by Phil Erickson, a mime performer.
They then moved to Atlanta, Georgia to perform in a local television show of original plays and musicals called ‘The Merry Mutes’ in the early 1950s. Van Dyke made his first appearance on the stage theater in The Girls Against the Boys and starred in Bye Bye Birdie as Albert Peterson.
