Doechii’s ‘Colbert’ Performance Considered ‘Harriet Tubman Music’

Doechii’s latest performance has caused some people to criticize the singer for her sound and her aesthetic taste towards it.

The rapper stopped The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on December 4, where she performed the songs “Boiled Peanuts” and “Denial is a River”.

Dressed in Gucci and Adidas, the Florida-based musician and her two backup dancers weaved through waist-length braids, moving in sync with both tracks.

The performance features expressive facial expressions, choreography, and custom staging.

However, not everyone was a fan of the show and a conversation broke out on X, where many labeled the show “Harriet Tubman’s music”.

“Making those Harriet Tubman tracks is a cheat to get respect in the rap world…” one person wrote alongside a clip of the performance.

It’s no surprise that social media erupted in debate about the brand.

“We’re so sorry that she got dressed up and actually put art into her art. I know most people can relate to that a lot,” wrote user X, coming to the defense rapper.

Another user praised Doechii for not only rapping about sex and money.

Another added: “An artist who not only talks about sex and money also becomes famous and everyone starts hating, that’s so strange.”

Others questioned the use of the term.

“I’m sorry… But who uses the term… “Harriet Tubman” music? I’m trying to get the point across,” another asked.

Harriet Tubman was an American social activist and abolitionist. She helped rescue slaves using a network of safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. In her later years, she was an activist in the women’s suffrage movement.

Doechii visited X the next day to reveal some new details about the performance.

“This song is for Hip Hop. I feel strongly inspired by Hip Hop music and how it has contributed to who I am today. This is the first performance I choreographed myself and one of The most important things I want to highlight is my connection to black women through Hip Hop. With the help of hair artist Malcom Marquez, we were able to transform the iconic art performance “This came to life in just one short week,” she said speak.

Doechii added: “This is my view on the future of Hip Hop. This is darkness. This is luxury. This is history.”
