Dolly and Carl first met at Wishy-Washy laundromat in Nashville. It was also Dolly’s first day in Music City. Carl passes by in his white Chevy while 18-year-old Dolly is doing laundry. He stopped to warn her that she would get sunburned wearing revealing clothing.
He started talking to her when she went inside to fold clothes. “He looked at my face and was curious about who I was and what I wanted to do,” Dolly Parton is reported to have said.
According to Parton, Carl looked Parton straight in the eyes during their conversation, which was unusual for her. Carl’s mother wanted a grand wedding for the two of them, but Parton was constrained by her music contract, which forced her to wait before walking down the aisle.
