Don Cheadle was born on November 29, 1964 in Kansas City, Missouri, the United States, to Donald Frank Cheadle Sr. and Bettye Cheadle, his father a clinical psychologist and his mother a teacher.

His three siblings are Colin Cheadle, Andrew Kilbourne and Cindy Cheadle. He loved music from a young age and participated in the school choir. In his early years, he and his family traveled frequently.
Don Cheadle attended Hartley Elementary School in Lincoln, Nebraska from 1970 to 1974, and graduated from Eastside High School in Denver, Colorado in 1982.
