Early life and education
Donnie Yen, also known as Zhen Zidan in Chinese, was born in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China. He was born on July 27, 1963 to Klyster Yen, a newspaper editor, and Mark Bow-sim, a famous Wudang and Tai Chi master. Wudang and Tai Chi are two internal martial arts that emphasize slow movements and meditation.
Donnie Yen left his birthplace when he was two years old and went to Hong Kong with his family. Later, when he was eleven years old, they moved to Boston, USA. His sister Donnie Yen, who is also a martial artist and actor, also ventured into the film industry and starred in the movie The Adventures of John Tao: Rock Around the Dragon In 2007.
