Despite poor box office results and mixed reviews, it was still named one of the top ten films of 2017 by the National Board of Review, and Zhou Hong was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Zoom out movie ending explained
In the tranquil embrace of the Norwegian fjords, Dr. Asbjornsen and his wife boarded a boat helmed by Toussaint’s friend Joris Konrad. There, in the calm waters, Dr. Asbjornsson delivered the disheartening news that humanity’s fate was sealed due to the continued release of Arctic methane emissions. Paul questions whether downsizing can change this dismal course, but Dr. Asbjornsen laments that it is too late, with only a tiny minority of the world choosing to embrace downsizing. That night, Paul and Magnolia found comfort in each other’s arms.
In the colony, a revelation awaits – the colonists, including Dr. Asbjornsson, are preparing to access a vast underground vault. Their descendants will emerge billions of years from now, when stability has returned to the Earth’s surface. Toussaint and Joris were skeptical of this seemingly fanatical plan and asserted that extinction was still centuries away. On the contrary, Paul had a firm desire to contribute to the preservation of humanity’s heritage.
He begged Magnolia to accompany him, but she stood firm, knowing those in need would remain on the surface. As the vault door closes, Paul has an epiphany and he is back in the world. Back at Leisureland, Paul’s life has a new purpose as he and Yulan devote themselves to serving the slum dwellers, finding satisfaction in simple acts of kindness, such as eating with an old man.

downsizing plot
Dr. Jørgen Asbjørnsen invented “downsizing,” a process that adds five inches to a person’s height to combat overpopulation and global warming. Paul and Audrey decided to give it a try, but broke up when Audrey quit. Paul eventually became lonely, undersized, and financially disadvantaged. He befriends amputee activist Magnolia and helps her in the slums outside Leisureland.
Later, they learn that humanity is about to become extinct due to Arctic methane emissions. Paul initially joined a program to save humans in the Sanctuary, but ultimately chose to stay and help those in need on the surface. He continues to help Magnolia and the slum dwellers, finding satisfaction in simple acts of kindness.
