Early life and education
Phil McGraw was born and raised in Vinita, Oklahoma, United States, on September 1, 1950. Born into a family of three, he has two older sisters named Donna McGraw and Deana McGraw. He also has a younger sister named Brenda McGraw. He is the only male in the family.
His father, Joe McGraw, was an oil supplier in the North Texas oil patch. His mother, Jerry McGraw, on the other hand, was a housewife. Phil McGraw had a difficult childhood. At the age of 13, he started working at an A&W Root Beer stand and a local chain called Pizza Planet in Oklahoma City.

Dr. Phil moved from Oklahoma to Kansas with his father. In Kansas, his father continued his lifelong goal of becoming a psychologist. He also completed his high school education in Kansas. He attended Shawnee Mission North High School in Overland Park, Kansas.
He was active in high school sports. He was a linebacker for the school’s football team in 1968. He played so well that he earned a football scholarship to the University of Tulsa. He then transferred to Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. He graduated from Midwestern State University in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.
Phil McGraw then earned his MA and PhD in clinical psychology and his MA in experimental psychology; both in 1976. His dissertation, Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Psychological Intervention, was completed in 1979 at North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas).
Personal life
Phil McGraw married his wife in 1970 when he was just 20 years old. His first wife was Debbie Higgins. However, the couple separated a few years after their marriage.
According to Debbie Higgins McCall, Dr. Phil was a domineering man who did not let her do what she wanted. She also accused Phil McGraw of adultery. The couple finalized their divorce in 1973.
During the annulment, Phil McGraw had a relationship with another woman named Robin McGraw. He and Robin McGraw dated for three years before marrying in 1976.
Dr. Phil and Robin McGraw have two children together. Their first child is named Jay McGraw, and their second child is named Jordan McGraw.
Career
After earning his doctorate, Phil McGraw reunited with his father in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he established his own psychology practice. In 1985, Thelma Box, a savvy Texas businesswoman, partnered with Dr. Phil and his father to offer Pathways self-help seminars. In October 1991, six years after partnering with Thelma Box, he sold his share of the company for $325,000.
Phil McGraw, along with attorney Gary Dobbs, co-founded Courtroom Sciences, Inc. (CSI) in 1990. CSI is a well-known trial consulting firm that provides services such as depositions, jury selection, and witness preparation in the psychology of litigation in the United States. The company has provided its expertise to many corporations, prominent attorneys, and even some of the world’s largest airlines.
Although Dr. Phil is no longer an officer or director of CSI, the popular television show Bull is based on his experience as a trial consultant. He is credited as one of the creators of the series. Through CSI, he also had the opportunity to work with Oprah Winfrey.
In 1995, Oprah Winfrey hired Phil McGraw’s law firm, CSI, to assist her in her upcoming beef trial in Amarillo, Texas. After the trial, Oprah Winfrey was so impressed with Phil McGraw’s support that she invited him to appear on her show. His segment received a standing ovation, and he began appearing regularly as a relationship and life strategy advisor.
In September 2002, Phil McGraw founded Peteski Productions and launched the television show Dr. Phil produced by Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Studios.
In 2012, Phil McGraw launched Doctor On Demand, an online platform that allows people to schedule online consultations with a network of healthcare professionals. In 2014, the company introduced web and mobile services.
