Early life and education
Younan Nowzaradan, now 79, was born in Tehran, Iran, on October 11, 1944. He spent his early years in Tehran with his younger brother.
Nowzaradan’s family is of Assyrian origin. He completed his basic education in Iranian schools and further studies at Tehran University. In 1970, he obtained a medical degree.
Immediately after graduating from the University of Tehran, Dr. Nowzaradan moved to the United States to pursue his medical career.
He entered the Medical Orientation Program at Saint Louis University in 1971.
He then completed his Surgical Rotations at St. John’s Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Nowzaradan is a Fellow of the American Academy of Surgeons and is board certified by the American Board of Surgery.

Dr. Nowzaradan was previously married to Delores Nowzaradan. They were married for 27 years before divorcing in 2002.
The divorce was finalized in 2004, with Delores receiving 70% of the marital assets. The couple have three children: Jennifer, Jessica and Jonathan.
Career
Dr. Younan Nowzaradan’s illustrious medical career spans more than five decades. He began practicing medicine after completing his surgical residency at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee.
During his surgical training in Nashville, he caught the attention of renowned cardiac surgeon Dr. Denton Cooley, who saw great potential in him. However, Dr. Nowzaradan decided to pursue a cardiology fellowship at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston.
