Mdumiseni Nzimande, also known as Dumi Mkokstad, was born on May 7, 1992 in KwaZulu-Natal to Falithenjwa and Dudu Nzimande.

Growing up with two siblings, he was exposed to music at an early age.
At the age of 9, Dumi sang at store openings and funerals in his hometown of Mount Elif and Kokstad, alongside his father and siblings.
During one of his performances, he was discovered by music promoter Hamilton Kubashe.
