early life
Tan Chee Chye, nicknamed Tan Chee Chai, was born in Singapore on 4 February 1961. He is the eldest of three siblings, his brother Eric Tan is an events manager and his sister Lolita Tan is a theatre director and entrepreneur. While the identity of his parents remains a mystery, he was raised by Chinese Singaporean parents who instilled in him a strong sense of cultural identity and family values.
