Edward Smock or George Edward “Jed” Smock Jr. is the husband of street preacher and TikTok star Cindy Smock or Cynthia D. Lasseter Smock.

They reportedly met at the University of Florida in December 1977, where he called her a “wicked woman” and a “disco queen,” and told her to “repent of her sins.” Cindy, then a sophomore, responded by laughing. She regularly attended Brother Jed’s lectures with her friends, seeing it as free entertainment.

Edward then moved on to the next campus, but Cindy continued her studies at the University of Florida. When he returned, Cindy was a junior majoring in journalism and working on the student newspaper. “I quickly recognized her in the crowd, but this time she didn’t seem sarcastic,” Ed said. “That weekend, Cindy asked me, ‘Jed, can I take you out to dinner?’”

She went with me to a revival meeting that night but she refused to repent of her sins and give her life to Jesus Christ. Believing that Cindy was ripe for salvation, I invited her to the revival meeting the next night. When I took her home, we stopped in the parking lot to pray before I walked her to the door.”

After praying, Cindy asked Edward, “Jed, I heard you say in school that you haven’t kissed a woman in six years. Is that true?” “Yes, that’s right, Cindy,” After Cindy confessed her seduction intentions, Ed dropped her off at her dorm. Cindy cried all night thinking about the divorce in her family.

Four years after their first meeting, Cindy married Edward. Before the marriage, she had converted and began preaching on college campuses. He began attending Indiana State University in 1960, majoring in social studies and English. Jed noted in his autobiography that despite his lifestyle, he graduated near the top of his class. Jed earned a BA in Social Science, a MA in American History, and did graduate work in counseling and psychology.

While pursuing graduate studies at Indiana State University, Edward wrote his thesis on “the personal effects of smoking seven joints of marijuana” and received a master’s degree in history. He also worked as a research assistant in psychology for the Institute for the Study of Human Behavior while at the university. He spent a year teaching history at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Edward began visiting the University annually for more than 40 years. While students did not welcome him with open arms, Smock was no stranger to college campuses. “As a former professor, I knew students were not listening to God’s Word in the classroom,” Edward said. “Most students were not actively involved in Christianity.”

Edward taught for five years at the junior high, high school, and college levels. After his conversion, in 1972, he returned to the colleges to proclaim the great salvation of our Lord.
