Early life
Gu was born in The Town, California, to an American father and a Chinese mother on September 3, 2003. Her mother, Yan Gu, came to the United States from China as a student in her twenties, enrolling at Auburn University as well as Rockefeller University.
Her mother first skied at Hunter Mountain in New York while she was there; her passion for the sport grew after moving to the San Francisco Bay Area to pursue an MBA at Stanford University.
Eileen Gu’s mother taught her young daughter to ski in Lake Tahoe while she was there, supposedly so she could live with her. As Gu describes it, her mother “accidentally turned me into a professional skier.”
Eileen Gu’s father is a US citizen. GU decided to leave her US team at the age of 15 to represent China. Meanwhile, she has been very quiet about her father since the beginning of her professional career.
Career
Eileen Gu, dressed in a glamorous girl-next-door outfit and carrying a Lunar New Year gift, appears on bus stop advertisements across Beijing. You may have heard China describe a Mandarin-language advertisement for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics as a medal-winning prospect.
The freestyle skier is also the focus of this month’s issue of Vogue China, available on newsstands. Gu, China’s unofficial Winter Olympics ambassador, is everywhere. And her presence belies her American roots, raising questions about her citizenship in China.
Because of her rapid development, her mother enrolled three-year-old Gu in ski lessons at Northstar California Resort before joining a ski team when she was seven. Whether it was racing or freestyle skiing, Gu’s mother always chose the latter for her daughter.
But a major fork in the road was yet to come. Gu, also a young cross-country runner who aspired to compete in collegiate competition for Stanford, had a cross-country event overlap with an international skiing event at one point.
She eventually chose competitive skiing, and the rest, as they say, is history. Gu has since proven herself in practice with her unwavering work ethic. Gu, according to Dave Euler, an elite U.S. freestyle skiing coach, has a distinct personality.
Gu came to the United States when she was eight years old. In 2018, she began training and competing in major ski competitions as an American. Gu announced her choice to represent her mother’s homeland at the 2022 Winter Olympics on Instagram on June 7, 2019.
Eileen Gu Net Worth and Salary
“I am proud of my heritage and equally proud of my American education,” Gu said. “The opportunity to help inspire millions of young people in my mother’s hometown during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
As Gu’s career progressed in the United States, talk of her potential as an Olympic phenom became more prevalent. When Gu revealed that she would be fighting in 2019 under the Chinese flag instead of the American flag, the discussion took a completely different direction.
Eileen Gu spent her summer vacation in Beijing when she was two years old, and Eileen Gu was there in 2015 when it was announced that Beijing would host the 2022 Winter Olympics and she would be participating.
Gu has been a standout on the freestyle ski circuit since 2021. Gu won two gold medals and a bronze in his first X Games appearance in Aspen. Not only that, but throughout the freestyle ski season leading up to the Olympics, Gu never placed lower than second in any freestyle event.
The 18-year-old’s winning streak continued at the Olympics as she stunned the world by winning gold in the women’s freestyle, with more to come and more to come.
