On April 9, 1998, college tennis star Heather Joy (née Arrington) and St. Louis Cardinals minor league baseball player Steven J. Fanning welcomed Mary Elle Fanning into the world in Conyers, Georgia.

Her maternal grandfather is American football player Rick Arrington and her aunt is ESPN reporter Jill Arrington. One of the most important ancestors of the Arrington family is gentleman farmer William Farrar.
