Ellen Davies Rush of San Francisco and Richard Stockton Rush Jr. of Westminster, Vermont are the parents of Stockton Rush’s parents. Stockton III has spent his life exploring the skies and the water.
Years before founding Washington-based OceanGate in 2009, Stockton earned his jet transport certification at age 19 in 1981, becoming the world’s youngest pilot. Stockton holds an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley, and a degree in aerospace engineering from Princeton University. He built the Kittredge K-350 submarine along with the Glasair III aircraft.
On June 18, five passengers boarded a submarine on a tourist expedition to the wreck of the Titanic. However, within an hour and a half, contact was lost with the submarine. The expedition included OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, billionaire Hamish Harding, businessman Shahzada Dawood and his teenage son Suleman, and French explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet.

Meet Ellen Davies Rush, Mother of OceanGate Stockton Rush
OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush’s mother is Ellen Davies Rush.
She was the daughter of Louise Davies of San Francisco, for whom the Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall is named, and the late Ralph K Davies, president of the American President Lines, and Deborah Brock Rush of Philadelphia. Davies was born into relative poverty on a remote cattle ranch in Plumas County. Louise’s mother moved in with her and her three other children when her parents divorced, eventually settling in Oakland, where Louise attended a Catholic boarding school.
Louise worked as a stenographer in Oakland for seven years, earning $25 a week, before moving to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. There she met a young businessman from Standard Oil who would later become her husband.
In 1925, they were married.
Louise M. Davies, the San Francisco philanthropist who gave the city she loved a $5 million concert hall in 1980, died Monday at a nursing home in Portola Valley, California. She was 98.
Louise, whose husband, Ralph K. Davies, an oil millionaire, died in 1971, gave millions of dollars to many cultural, educational, and health charities in the Bay Area, including the Exploratorium, the World Affairs Council, the Conservatory of Music, the University of San Francisco, Stanford University, and the San Francisco Opera.
Ralph Davies rose to vice president of Standard Oil. But when the presidency was no longer available, he left and started his own oil company. He also ran American President Lines and the Natomas Company. In 1934, the couple bought 20 acres in Woodside, California, where they built a magnificent home in 1940, where Mrs. Davies lived until recent years.
Rush’s mother, Ellen Davies Rush, predeceased her mother, Louise Davies, according to her obituary. She was survived by her sister, Maryon Davies Lewis of San Francisco.

OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush’s father is R Stockton Rush Jr or Richard Stockton Rush Jr. is a businessman, actor and entrepreneur. Stockton Jr. was born on November 15, 1930 in Philadelphia.
Stockton Jr. was vice president and longtime member of the Bohemian Club. He graduated from Princeton University in 1953 and served as a lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps from 1953 to 1955. He was a member of the board of directors of Stockdale Oil and Gas. In the 1970s, he and his family moved to New Zealand to establish Takaro, a conservation-focused hunting and fishing resort. As founder, president, and CEO of the Recovery Institute, he was a leader in alcoholism education.
Stockton Jr. founded the Institute for Recovery and was prominent in alcohol abuse education. He received theatrical acclaim for his role as a frustrated executive officer in the award-winning play, The Caine Mutiny Court Martial, and was elected president of the prestigious Bohemian Club.
Stockton Jr. died on New Year’s Day at the age of 69 after a brief illness.
