Elton John is opening up about the devastating diagnosis that left him blind in one eye.
In a statement shared on Instagram on Tuesday, the 77-year-old British singer-songwriter revealed that he is recovering from an eye infection earlier this year.
“Over the summer, I was dealing with a serious eye infection that unfortunately left me with limited vision in one eye,” John wrote. “I am recovering, but it is an extremely slow process and it will be some time before the vision returns in the affected eye.”
John went on to thank his “wonderful team of doctors and nurses” and his family for “their excellent care.” [him] in the past few weeks.”
“I’ve spent the summer quietly recovering at home and feel positive about the progress in my healing and recovery so far,” the rock legend added.
After updating his health status, many fans and celebrities took to the comments section of his post to send their love and wishes for his speedy recovery.
“We love you,” Chappell Roan commented.
“You are pure light and pray that light will help heal those eyes. We love you Sir Elton,” a comment from Al Roker read.
Billy Porter also left a message for John: “Sending you all the love and peace I can.”
“Ted Lasso” star Hannah Waddingham said she was “sending healing, golden energy” to John.
“Get well soon Sir Elton. Yesterday my dad and I went to his concert together. He loved Bennie And The Jets,” singer Carnie Wilson wrote.
John’s announcement comes just over a year after he was hospitalised after a fall at his home in the south of France.
The “Your Song” hitmaker spent the night in Princess Grace Hospital in Monaco after he slipped and fell in August 2023.
“Elton attended a local hospital as a precautionary measure,” his spokesman said at the time. “Following checks, he was discharged this morning and is now back home in good health.”
Two years ago, John also suffered a bad fall that left him with “significant pain and discomfort” in his hip.
That fall required surgery, forcing the EGOT winner to postpone his “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour dates until 2023.
When the postponement was announced, the singer shared in a statement that he had initially undergone “intensive physical therapy and specialist treatment” for his injury.
However, John said the pain got worse and eventually made it difficult for him to move.
Last July, John officially announced his retirement from touring during a show in Stockholm, the final stop on his five-year tour.
However, he joked that he might still return to perform live “one time” in the future.
