Evelyn Yang was born on October 31, 1981 in New York, United States, to Chinese parents. Her parents were immigrants from China who came to the United States in the late 1970s.
She grew up in a middle-class neighborhood in New York City. She attended public schools and was an excellent student. After graduating from high school, Evelyn Yang attended Columbia University, majoring in economics.
After graduating from college, Evelyn Yang began working in finance. She worked on Wall Street for several years before moving to Hong Kong to work for a venture capital firm.
