Yasmeen Ghauri was discovered in Montreal by Edward Zaccaria, artistic director of Platine Coiffure. Despite her parents’ disapproval, she pursued a modeling career, debuting in Milan and Paris before moving to New York City in 1990.

She quickly caught the attention of critics and fashion labels, with The New York Times describing her runway walk as “a gyration of the hips”.

Ghauri’s first major cover was for Elle magazine in 1991, and she was soon asked to walk for high-end fashion brands. She wore makeup because there weren’t enough shades for her skin tone.

In 1992, she walked in Versace’s infamous ‘Bondage’ show and became the face of Hermès and Lanvin. She also signed a contract with Victoria’s Secret and became one of their Angels.
