The story revolves around a black Australian mercenary who is on a mission to rescue the kidnapped son of an Indian crime boss in Dhaka, Bangladesh. However, things take a dangerous turn when he finds himself betrayed by someone he trusted. The Russo Brothers announced the development of “Extraction” in 2018, aiming to adapt the 2014 graphic novel into a thrilling film.
While the film differs from the source material in some aspects, the core story remains largely the same. “The Rescue” was released by Netflix on April 24, 2020. The show received critical acclaim for its performances (particularly Chris Hemsworth’s performance) as well as its cinematography, editing, and action scenes. However, some criticism was directed at the script.
“Extraction” was a hit on Netflix, becoming the most-watched original film in the streaming platform’s history. In its first four weeks, it attracted more than 99 million viewers. The film’s success led to the announcement of a sequel, Extinction 2, which is scheduled to be released on June 16, 2023. The main cast is returning for what promises to be another exciting chapter for the series.

Extraction end explanation
The ending of “Extraction” is significant, especially in Taylor’s “death” scene and final shot. Ovie’s final scene is similar to Tyler’s first, as he jumps off a cliff into a deep lagoon, allowing himself to sink to the bottom before resurfacing. Throughout the film, water symbolizes two important concepts: courage and death.

At the beginning of the film, Taylor, who has lost his wife and son, becomes fearless in the face of death. As Nick said, he’s even actively seeking this. For Taylor, water is linked to memories of his son at the beach, his first plunge into the water signifying a flirtation with death. His memory of his son remains hazy throughout the film, until at the end he falls into the river, leading the audience to believe that he died along with his son.
Ove, on the other hand, lacks the courage to approach a girl who smiles at him in his introduction scene. However, as the story progresses, Tyler discovers a new purpose in saving Ovie’s life, something he was unable to do for his own son. At the same time, Ove’s close encounter with death dispels his fears. His leap from a great height into the water, his quiet moments beneath the surface, and his eventual emergence symbolize the courage he has acquired.
When both Taylor and Ovie finally dive into the water, it signifies a kind of rebirth, as they emerge as transformed individuals. Ovi finds strength and courage within himself, while Tyler, as the trailer for Extinction 2 hints, discovers a new purpose to continue his journey. Water is a powerful symbol throughout the film, representing embracing death and conquering fear. It shows the character development of Tyler and Ovie, culminating in their experiences of change and the promise of a new beginning.

Ovi Sr. refused to pay the ransom or give his territory to Amir, fearing it would damage his reputation. Instead, he ordered Saju to rescue his son, threatening to harm Saju’s own children if he refused. Tyler Rake, a former Australian Army Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) operator turned mercenary, is approached by his superior, Nik Khan, to perform a rescue operation in Dhaka, Bangladesh Ove’s mission. Taylor accepted the job.
Tyler and Khan’s team prepare to evacuate, planning to retrieve Ovie and get paid by the old Ovie’s men. Tyler successfully rescues Ovie, eliminates his captors and takes him to the extraction point. However, their escape becomes complicated when Asif orders Colonel Rashid to impose a city-wide lockdown on Dhaka to prevent them from leaving. To make matters worse, it is revealed that Ove Sr.’s bank account has been frozen, preventing him from paying the mercenaries as planned.
Saju kills Taylor’s teammates and attempts to kill Taylor in order to save Ovi himself and avoid paying the mercenaries. Khan arranges for a helicopter to leave the city for Tyler and tells him to give up Ovie as the contract is no longer valid. Taylor is haunted by the memory of his son, whom he had to leave due to illness, and whom he refuses to abandon Ovie. He fights off Sarju and evades the corrupt Dhaka City Police Tactical Unit working for Asif.

Taylor contacted his friend Gaspar, a retired team member living in Dhaka, who offered them a place to spend the night. Gaspar revealed that Asif put a $10,000,000 bounty on Ovie’s head and offered to share in the bounty if Taylor allowed him to kill Ovie. Taylor refused, leading to a violent fight between the two. Surprisingly, Ove shoots Gaspar with his own gun, saving Taylor’s life.
Taylor calls Saju for help and they reluctantly join forces to escape Dhaka. Taylor created a fork while Saju and Ovi passed the bridge checkpoint. Khan and her remaining mercenaries arrive from the other side of the bridge, engaging in a firefight. Asif watched the chaos unfold from a distance. During the conflict, Saju was shot by Rashid, who was later killed by Khan.
Despite being seriously injured, Taylor directed Ovi to run to Khan’s waiting helicopter. As Ovi escapes to Mumbai with Khan and the rescue team, the critically injured Taylor is shot in the neck by Farhad, a young criminal eager to impress Asif. After learning that Ovie is safe, Taylor falls into the river. Eight months later, Khan encountered Asif in the bathroom and shot her in retaliation.
