F-Zero99

F-Zero 99 is a racing game with battle royale elements released by Nintendo in 2023. The game is available for online multiplayer and is developed by Nintendo Software Technology. It was launched during the Nintendo Direct presentation on September 14, 2023, and can be downloaded for free to subscribers of the Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) service.

This game returns to the F-Zero series, which was released in 2004. It follows a 99-style battle royale format where players can compete against up to 98 other people online. The goal is to defeat your opponent and finish the game. Players have an energy meter, and if the meter is depleted due to damage, they are eliminated. However, players can win “KOs” by taking out less powerful people to extend their own meter. Additionally, collecting Super Sparks allows players to access a higher path, called the Sky Road, which provides a speed boost for a limited time. The game is a modern version of the classic F-Zero game released in 1990 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).

F-Zero 99 gameplay

Similar to Pac-Man 99, Super Mario Bros. 35, and Tetris 99, F-Zero 99 transforms F-Zero’s traditional gameplay into a battle royale experience. The game retains the graphical style, vehicles, and tracks of the original SNES game. It takes inspiration from the F-Zero X and features a speed-boosting system.

Gameplay is very similar to classic F-Zero, but it’s adapted to a battle royale format, allowing players to compete against 98 other people in real time. The goal is to defeat your opponent and finish in first place. Each player’s vehicle is equipped with an energy meter that serves as both health and a reserve of temporary speed boosts. Collisions and boosts deplete the meter and you are eliminated if empty, but can be refilled in the pit area.

Collecting Super Sparks dropped by other racers and special golden bumper cars will fill up the Super Accelerometer, allowing access to Sky Road (a floating road above the track) for a limited speed boost. As the game progresses, players behind are eliminated and replaced by slower-moving bumper cars, which adds another challenge. A rechargeable spin action helps players knock down these cars and their opponents’ cars.
