FAMAS Award
The Philippine Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards, also known as the FAMAS Awards, is an annual event that recognizes outstanding achievements in Philippine cinema. The award is presented by the Philippine Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (FAMAS), an organization of award-winning writers and film columnists.
Founded in 1952, the FAMAS Awards is the oldest film industry awards organization in the Philippines and one of the oldest film industry awards organizations in Asia. Well-known in the local film industry. FAMAS Award winners are selected through a voting process in which Academy members, including avid moviegoers, fans and enthusiasts, vote to determine the winners in each category.
Traditionally, the FAMAS Award is considered the highest recognition a filmmaker or artist can receive in the Philippine film industry from 1952 to 1982. However, in 1982, the Philippine Film Academy Awards (Luna) were established as the Philippine equivalent of the Oscars. This has resulted in the FAMAS Award being informally regarded as second only to the Luna Award. Despite this, the FAMAS Award remains highly prestigious and respected due to its long history.
In addition to the FAMAS Awards, there are other prestigious film award bodies in the Philippines, including the Luna Awards, the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino (Philippine Film Critics Association) Gawad Urian Awards, and the Philippine Film and Television Star Awards Film Press Club. Winning all four awards in the same category for the same work is considered a remarkable achievement and is known as winning a “Grand Slam”.
Overall, the FAMAS Awards play a vital role in recognizing and honoring the talents and achievements of individuals in the Philippine film industry. It serves as a platform to celebrate the outstanding contributions of filmmakers, actors and various professionals in creating exceptional cinematic experiences for audiences.
