Fans Criticize VMAs for Rewarding Katy Perry’s ‘General’ Career

Eminem fans have expressed anger on social media after the rapper was snubbed from a prestigious award at the upcoming 2024 MTV VMAs.

MTV has announced that Katy Perry will receive the Video Vanguard Award at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) on September 11, 2024.

“Katy is a musical inspiration and a true pop culture icon,” said Bruce Gillmer, chief music content officer at Paramount+ and president of music, musical talent, programming and events at Paramount.

“With her groundbreaking creative vision, she has become a global phenomenon and taken over the world’s biggest stages.”

MTV also confirmed that Eminem will open the 2024 VMAs with a live performance on Wednesday.

The rapper will perform his 12th studio album, “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grace),” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, his 11th album to reach that milestone.

Following the announcement that Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, would be opening the show while Perry accepted the award, many Eminem fans expressed anger on social media, arguing that the “Lose Yourself” rapper deserved the Video Vanguard award.

@LaPureVibe wrote on X, “Listen, I’m not a huge Eminem fan, but he really does charity work there… It’s disrespectful that they didn’t give him the Vanguard award, which he deserves for his iconic cinematography. And they gave it to the most mediocre white girl.”

“Eminem deserves the Video Vanguard 10 times more than Katy Perry, whose ‘comeback’ was a disaster, to put it bluntly,” @StateOfReds13 wrote. “You know what’s sad? Katy Perry (who’s been a complete failure since Witness) should get the Video Vanguard instead of Eminem or even Linkin Park. But I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by MTV’s antics,” he also said in another tweet.

@AjHumanWireTap stated, “Eminem turns 52 next month. His main audience is people in their late 30s and 40s. Plus, no one cares about MTV. Eminem has never won a video Vanguard award. That’s a joke, and neither does mtv.”

In July, the “Teenage Dream” hitmaker released the first single from her seventh album, “143.” Despite being billed as a powerful feminist statement, the song “Woman’s World” was met with swift criticism for its lack of originality and hypocrisy.

In addition to collaborating with controversial music producer Dr. Luke, Perry also collaborated with a predominantly male group to write the song.

The song was co-written and produced by Dr. Luke, Aaron Joseph, Vaughn Oliver and Rocco Did It Again!, with Perry and Chloe Angelides being the only female artists involved in the songwriting process.

“You can’t write a song about female empowerment when it’s basically all men,” an insider told the Daily Mail at the time, adding, “[Perry] She can’t empathize with other women because she lives in her celebrity bubble. She has no idea what it’s like to be a woman in the real world.”

“She doesn’t use her star power to make a difference in the world – she uses it to make money,” the source concluded.
