early life and education
Farhan Akhtar was born on January 9, 1974 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. He is the son of renowned screenwriter and poet Javed Akhtar and writer and actor Hani Irani.
Farhan’s parents divorced when he was young, and his father married actress Shabana Azmi in 1984. Farhan has a sibling Zoya Akhtar, who is also a famous film producer and screenwriter in Bollywood.
Akhtar studied at Maneji Cooper School in Mumbai and then pursued a law degree at HR College, Mumbai. He is of Indian origin and believes in atheism as his religious belief.

In 2006, Akhtar directed, produced and wrote the screenplay for the action thriller Don, a remake of the 1978 film of the same name. He then directed the war film Lakshya in 2004 and Don 2, the sequel to Don in 2011.
As an actor, Akhtar made his silver screen debut in the musical Rock On!! 2008. For this film, he won the National Film Award for Best Hindi Film (as Producer) and the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.
He then starred, wrote and produced the buddy road movie Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara in 2011, which won him Filmfare Awards for Best Film, Best Supporting Actor and Best Dialogues. In 2013, he played the legendary athlete Milha Singh in the biopic “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag”, for which he won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
