Early life
Fati Abubakar was born into the family of Mr. and Mrs. Abubakar in 1987.
She is a northerner from Borno state. She spent her formative years in Bama LGA, Borno.
She was raised Muslim by her parents and comes from a large family. As a child, she wanted to become a public health worker. That’s because she likes to help people, especially the elderly and children.
She is a trained nurse who has worked in health centers and hospitals in Northern Nigeria. In addition to her work as a medical worker, she also has a deep passion for photography.

She has a bachelor’s degree in Nursing. She holds a diploma in Public Health from London South Bank University.
She studied at Duke University, North Carolina and graduated with an MFA in Documentary and Experimental Arts in 2020.
Career
After earning her first two degrees, Fati Abubakar worked as an aid worker in Nigeria. In addition, she also records stories with her camera. She works as a photographer whenever she has free time.
In 2016, she decided to embark on a project called Bits Of Borno. The project showcases the stories of the people of Maiduguri, Borno State. The city was worst affected by the insurgency that occurred in the Northeast.
She posted these photos on Instagram and within a short time, her work went viral as thousands of people started following her page. The project has received critical acclaim both domestically and internationally.
Fati Abubakar’s work has appeared on the BBC, New York Times, CNN, Reuters, Voice Of America and Newsweek Europe, This Day, Africa Is A Country and Blueprint. Her work has also been shown at the Oxford Human Rights Conference.

As a photojournalist, she visited Deribe Palace in Maiduguri. She also made a Documentary about Operation Call A in Ghana and filmed a video for the Duke Amandla Choir.
She also spoke at Callascope, an event of the Duke Global Women’s Health Technology Center. She is one of the speakers at the 2019 edition of the Switch Point Conference.
She also attended the Black Women Photographers Cabaret. This event is organized by Magnum Foundation.
