Conservative radio host Jan Mickelson is no more. The former longtime WHO Radio presenter passed away at the end of July 2023 at the age of 74.

Cause of death of Jan Mickelson

Jan Mickelson’s death was announced on July 30, 2023 in a Facebook post made by his wife, Suzy. Suzy expressed gratitude to fans for their well wishes but did not go into detail about what took her husband’s life.

Jan, who is now mourned by several Iowa Republican politicians and conservative supporters, was admitted to the hospital on July 29. A Facebook post posted to the account by a loved one his account, detailing much of the medical condition that led to his death. According to this same FB post, Jan was taken to the hospital in critical condition due to low blood pressure and kidney failure. At the time this post was published, Jan was “still responding” and even made the nursing staff laugh. His death was reported soon after.

Back in 2015, Jan suffered a stroke and that eventually led to his retirement. Given that the road to recovery was expensive, he and his family even held a fundraiser and raised $6736 of the $200k goal. Then, in January 2018, Jan herself gave an update on her health. He seemed proud to have had a stem cell therapy. The process, as he explained, was done by removing fat, collecting stem cells, purifying and infusing them intravenously.

Jan Mickelson’s wife is Susanne A Mickelson, also known as Suzy Mickelson. The two got married at the ages of 19 and 20. They have seemed inseparable ever since.

During her first summer, Jan married Suzy, and they worked at Camp Wild Rose, in Wisconsin. One day, a camper came to Suzy and said Jan was injured and she should come see him. She went out to the car, blood running down Jan’s mouth. She pushed him into the car and said she would take him to the hospital. After a few seconds, Jan started laughing maniacally and so did all the campers. They played a prank on her. Suzy recalled stories like these when telling Jan’s recovery story and their struggle with his medical bills on the aforementioned go-fund-me page.

Recently, Suzy is working as a legal assistant in Des Moines.

Together, Jan and Suzy have a son. His name is Scott Bradley Mickelson and he was born in September 1979.

According to LinkedIn, Scott worked as the owner and CEO of Golden Eagle IRA in Las Vegas, Nevada since August 2020. Before starting his career, he studied Finance at Iowa State University – Ivy College of Business.

It seemed like everything was over and until the end, Jan’s wife and son were still by his side supporting and praying. “Mom and I, Jill, Alexander and Evonelle are all praying for recovery, comfort and support. Any and all prayers help. Thank you very much,” this is Jan’s son wrote on Jan’s FB wall on July 30, 2023. Here, Jill, he means his wife Jillaina. And Alexander and Evonelle are their children.

In August 2010, when Alexander was born, proud grandfather Jan wrote on social media that “New addition… Alexander Sterling Mickelson. Nicknamed “Thor” My nephew.” And then in February 2022, when Evonelle Mickelson was born, Jan announced to everyone that she was named after his mother.

His journey to talk radio fame began in the early 1980s when he worked for WHO Radio as News Director and then Program Director. In 1985, the Iowa Broadcast News Association named him that year’s “Best News Director.” Then, in 1988, he made his first appearance in the C-SPAN Video Library. And it was this event in his life that marked the beginning of his long and successful career in talk radio.
