foreigner band

foreigner is a famous British and American rock band, originally formed in 1976 in New York. The band’s formation was marked by the collaboration of guitarist Mick Jones and multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald (an original member of King Crimson), as well as vocalist Lou. Gram.

The band’s name, cleverly coined by Jones, reflects the different nationalities within the band: Jones, Macdonald and drummer Dennis Elliott are British, while Gram, keyboardist Al Greenwood and bassist Ed ·Gagliardi is an American.

This cultural fusion creates their unique sound and identity. Foreigner quickly rose to fame with their self-titled debut album in 1977, marking the beginning of a road to success. The album was the first of four consecutive albums to be certified at least 5× Platinum in the United States. The release of “Foreigner” was accompanied by chart-topping singles such as “Feels Like the First Time” and “Cold as Ice.”

Their subsequent album, Double Vision (1978), further cemented their status and included hits such as “Hot Blooded” and the title track. Despite line-up changes, which resulted in the departure of members like McDonald and Greenwood, Foreigner’s resilience resulted in the seminal album 4 (1981), which topped the international charts with albums including “Urgent”, “Waiting for a Girl Like You” and “Jukebox Hero.” ” The band sang the iconic ballad “I Wonder What Love Is” later in life and went on to dominate the charts, reaffirming their lasting impact on the music industry.

Foreigner band history

The Foreigners date back to 1976 and are led by British musician Mick Jones. Prior to joining Foreigner, Jones had an extensive musical background, having been a member of such notable bands as Nero and the Gladiators, Johnny Halliday, Spooky Tooth and Leslie West.

The band was formed after Leslie West’s band broke up and Jones was stranded in New York City. With the encouragement of West’s manager Bud Prager, Jones began a journey to continue writing songs and forming a new band.

Working with musicians from the New York music scene, Jones assembled the original lineup, which included keyboardist Al Greenwood, drummer Stan Williams and Louisiana bassist Jay Davis. However, after some experimentation with singers, Jones chose to keep only Greenwood while the search for the right combination of members continued.

The turning point came when Jones met former King Crimson member Ian McDonald and drummer Dennis Elliott during recording sessions for other projects. The roster began to take shape, and the final key member was Lou Gramm, whom Jones met through a copy of the Black Sheep album given to him by the band’s frontman backstage at a Ghost Teeth concert.

Building on Gramm’s impressive vocal prowess, the addition of Brooklyn bassist Ed Gagliardi completes the core lineup. The band’s original name “Trigger” was temporarily chosen and appeared on their demo tape. However, the record company had no response to the name.

When Atlantic Records A&R representative John Kalodner noticed a tape on the desk of Atlantic Records president Jerry L. Greenberg labeled “Trigger ”, events took an unexpected turn. Karodner recognized the potential of the songs and urged Greenberg to explore signing the band. After the name Trigger had already been taken, Mick Jones devised the nickname “Foreigners”, inspired by the fact that the band consisted of British and American members, making them “foreigners” in each other’s countries.

Foreign band debut

Foreigner’s self-titled debut album was released on March 8, 1977 on Atlantic Records, marking a defining moment in the band’s entry into the music industry. The album was originally produced by John Sinclair and Gary Lyons, with transformative remixes led by Mick Jones, Ian McDonald and Jimmy Douglas.

Mixed and recorded at The Hit Factory, Atlantic Recording Studios and Sarm Studios, the album’s seminal tracklist includes hits such as “Feels Like the First Time,” “Cold as Ice” and “Long, Long Way from Home” .

The album performed impressively on the charts, peaking at number four on the US Billboard 200 chart and reaching the top ten on the Canadian and Australian album charts. Additionally, the album reached number one on the Norwegian Albums Chart.

After reaching 5 million certified sales in the United States, Foreigner’s debut album not only introduced the world to their signature sound, it also paved the way for their future success and cemented their place in the rock music pantheon.
