Francois Phillipus Lodewyk Steyn (born 14 May 1987) is a South African rugby union player who plays for the South Africa national team and the Cheetahs in the Pro14.

He is the only South African rugby player to win the Rugby World Cup twice, 12 years apart, after helping the Springboks beat England in the 2007 final in France.

He started his career with the Boks but is currently pursuing his career in France with Racing memo 92. He moved to Paris after the 2009 British and Irish Lions tour. He is known for his long-range shooting ability.

After playing 10 games for the Natal Sharks, he was recognised by South African coach Jake White and called up to the Springboks squad.

He impressed at the 2007 Third Nations Cup with a goal against Australia in their opening match to help them win. He was one of the few players selected for the World Cup squad and secured his place for the rest of the tournament.

As a result, Francois Steyn became the youngest player to win a Rugby World Cup. In his final game for South Africa, he converted three penalties from his own half. He then went to France in 2012.

He is still occasionally invited to represent South Africa.

Early life

Francois Steyn is the son of Marcia Steyn and Piet Steyn. He was born on 14 May 1987 in Aliwal North, South Africa. He is the older brother of Willem Steyn.

He started his career as a teenage rugby player in South Africa, where he played 10 games before being noticed by a South African coach. He became famous for his long-range kicks. He later played for the league and won two World Cup matches.

Francois Steyn started his career with the Boks at the age of nineteen but is now pursuing his career in France with Racing memo 92.

He moved to Paris after the British and Irish Lions tour in 2009. He became famous for his long-range kicking ability in the Super 14 match against Throne Bumbles, where he kicked the ball 100 metres. He gained recognition from South African coach Jake White and was called up to the Springboks squad to tour Britain and Ireland at the age of 19.

He impressed at the 2007 Third Nations with a goal against Australia in their opening match to help them win. He was then selected for the World Cup squad. He secured the inside centre position for the remainder of the tournament.

He made a brilliant breakaway that resulted in a penalty for the Boks, thus making him the youngest player to win a Rugby World Cup.

Francois Steyn reached his 50th Test cap against Argentina in Cape Town and became the youngest South African to reach that height.

In 2007, he was recalled to South Africa to replace an injured player. In 2019, he was recalled to South Africa to play in the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan. He currently plays for Herault Rugby.
