Early life
Freddie Joe Ward was born in San Diego on December 30, 1942. After serving in the United States Air Force, he studied acting at the Herbert Berghof Studio in New York. Ward worked as a logger in Alaska and was a boxer before becoming an actor. While living in Rome, he dubbed Italian films into English and appeared in films by neorealist filmmaker Roberto Rossellini.
Career
Ward returned to the United States in the early 1970s and worked in experimental theater and television. He made his debut as a cowboy in Hearts of the West (1975). His breakthrough role was in Escape from Alcatraz (1979).
Ward appeared in Walter Hill’s Southern Comfort (1981). Timerider: The Adventures of Lyle Swann was his first leading role (1982). He later appeared in the action film Uncommon Valor and the drama Silkwood.
After supporting roles in Swing Shift (1984) and Secret Admirer (1985), Ward played the title character in Guy Hamilton’s action film Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins.
He appeared on numerous magazine covers after the film, which grossed only $15 million. Ward also appeared in a few low-budget films before returning to major films in 1988 as a cop in Off Limits.
