Ali Bongo Ondimba, the ousted president of Gabon, was born on February 9, 1959 in Brazzaville, the central city of the Republic of Congo. Alain Bernard Bongo is his birth name.
Ali Bongo’s father is Omar Bongo, former president and politician of Gabon, while his mother is Patience Dabany, former First Lady of Gabon.
Ali Bongo grew up with three siblings: Pascaline Bongo Ondimba, Albertine Amissa Bongo and Frédéric Bongo Ondimba. From 1977 to 1981, Ali Bongo attended Panthéon-Sorbonne University in Paris, France.
Career
After being appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs by his father in 1989, Ali Bongo held the position until 1991, when he moved to a new role as a member of the National Assembly. Then, in 1999, he was assigned the position of Minister of Defense.
After his father died in 2009, Bongo assumed the presidency through a controversial election. In 2016, Ali Bongo was again re-elected despite differences in the voting process.
1996, the High Council for Islamic Affairs of Gabon (CSAIG) was established. In the parliamentary elections that same year, supporters of Defense Minister Idriss Ngari challenged President Ali Bongo for the PDG nomination, but Bongo won and retained his seat with the help of his colleagues. his influential political ally, his maternal uncle, Jean-Boniface Assélé.
After being elected as a PDG candidate in the province of Haut-Ogooué, Ali Bongo became a member of the National Assembly in December 2001. He further consolidated his position in the party when he was elected vice president in the Congress PDG’s 8th regular session in July 2003.
Ali Bongo later played a key role in his father’s re-election campaign in the 2005 presidential election, serving as Youth Coordinator-General. In recognition of his efforts, he was promoted to Minister of Foreign Affairs on 21 January 2006, while continuing to hold his defense post.

According to military officers, Gabon President Ali Bongo Ondimba was placed under house arrest on August 30, 2023, while one of his sons was detained for “treason”. This development took place not long after military officers announced that they had successfully overthrown the Gabon government.
