Early life and education
Ali Bongo Ondimba, the ousted president of Gabon, was born on February 9, 1959, in Brazzaville, the central city of the Republic of Congo. His birth name was Alain Bernard Bongo.
Ali Bongo’s father is Omar Bongo, former president and politician of Gabon, while his mother is Patience Dabany, former First Lady of Gabon.
Ali Bongo grew up with three siblings: Pascaline Bongo Ondimba, Albertine Amissa Bongo and Frédéric Bongo Ondimba. From 1977 to 1981, Ali Bongo attended Panthéon-Sorbonne University in Paris, France.
Career
After being appointed by his father as Foreign Minister in 1989, Ali Bongo served in this capacity until 1991, when he moved to a new role as a member of Parliament. Then, in 1999, he was entrusted with the post of Defense Minister.
After his father’s death in 2009, Bongo assumed the presidency through a highly contested election. In 2016, Ali Bongo was re-elected despite discrepancies in the voting process.
In 1996, the High Council of Muslims of Gabon (CSAIG) was established. In the parliamentary elections that same year, supporters of Defense Minister Idriss Ngari challenged President Ali Bongo for the PDG nomination, but Bongo was able to win and retain his seat with the help of his influential political ally, his uncle Jean-Boniface Assélé.
After being elected as the PDG’s candidate in Haut-Ogooué Province, Ali Bongo became a member of the National Assembly in December 2001. He further consolidated his position within the party by being elected vice president at the PDG’s VIII Ordinary Congress in July 2003.
Ali Bongo later played a key role in his father’s re-election campaign in the 2005 presidential election, serving as Youth Coordinator General. In recognition of his efforts, he was promoted to Minister of State on 21 January 2006, while continuing to serve as Minister of Defense.

Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba was placed under house arrest on August 30, 2023, while one of his sons was detained on charges of “treason,” according to military officers. The development comes shortly after military officers announced that they had successfully overthrown the Gabonese government.
