He grew up in Gippsland, Victoria, with his four elders, Geoff and Kevin, two other brothers and three sisters. Ablett showed a love of sports from an early age and excelled in various sporting activities.

He won the state school high jump competition at the age of 10 and received club and competition awards for football performances at different age levels.

He dropped out of high school at age 15 to work as a bricklayer and focus on his football career.

However, he struggled to adapt to city life and returned to his hometown briefly. In 1984 he was recruited by the Geelong Football Club and became one of the VFL’s biggest stars of the late 80s.

Ablett’s exceptional performance in the 1989 VFL Grand Final, where he kicked nine goals, earned him the Norm Smith Medal.

He achieved many awards throughout his career, including three Coleman Medals, four All-Australian team selections and Geelong’s all-time leading goalscoring record with 1021 goals.
