Early life and education
Gary Ablett, 62, was born on 1 October 1961 in Drouin, Victoria, to Alfred and Colleen Ablett.
He grew up in Gippsland, Victoria, with four brothers, Geoff and Kevin, two other brothers and three sisters. Ablett showed a love of sport from an early age and excelled in a variety of sporting activities.
He won the public school high jump competition at the age of 10 and received club and competition awards for his football achievements at various age levels.
He dropped out of high school at the age of 15 to work as a bricklayer and focus on his football career.
Ablett joined his brothers in the Drouin senior team as a 16-year-old and played representative matches in the national competition before being recruited by Hawthorn.
Personal life
Ablett married his longtime partner Sue in 1985 and they have four children together: Natasha, Gary Jr., Nathan and Alisha.

Career
Ablett’s football career began with the Hawthorn Football Club in 1982, where he made his Victorian Football League (VFL) debut.
However, he struggled to adapt to city life and returned to his hometown for a short time. In 1984, he was recruited by the Geelong Football Club and became one of the VFL’s biggest stars in the late 80s.
Ablett’s outstanding performance in the 1989 VFL Grand Final, where he kicked nine goals, earned him the Norm Smith Medal.
He achieved numerous awards during his career, including three Coleman Medals, four All-Australian selections and is Geelong’s all-time leading goal scorer with 1021 goals.
