Early life and education

His father is Rodney Burghoff and his mother is Ann Burghoff.
Gary Burghoff was born with brachydactyly caused by Poland syndrome, which means three fingers on his left hand are much smaller than those on his right hand, so he learned tap dancing and became a drummer.
He gained early acting experience with the Belfry Players in Williams Bay, Wisconsin. Gary Berkhoff received his acting training at HB Studio in New York.
Profession
In 1967, Gary Burghoff first played the role of Charlie Brown in the Off-Broadway production of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. In 1968, he became the drummer for the band The Kinfolk.
The band’s lead singer was Lynda Carter, who later became a well-known actress. The band played for three months at the Sahara Hotel and Casino Club in Las Vegas, Nevada. Gary Burgoff and Lynda Carter remained friends and starred together in the 1978 blockbuster film The New Adventures of Wonder Woman in an episode called “The One Who Wouldn’t Tell”.
Gary Berghoff made his feature film debut in Robert Altman’s M.A.H. (1970). Although several actors from the original film made cameo appearances on the M.A.H. television series, Gary Berghoff was the only regular cast member, playing Reda O’Reilly.
Although he played the same character in both the TV series and the film, he noticed a change in the characterization; he said, “Radar was a lonely, gloomy, cynical character, and I made him a mysterious presence. I kept these characteristics for a short time until I noticed that the character in the TV series AMF Hospital was developing in a different direction than in the film. It evolved into a group of experienced and well-educated doctors (plus a head nurse) who would rather be anywhere else and understood the consequences of being stuck in a ‘terrible place.’
With Gelbart’s help, I began to make Radar a more unsuspecting and gullible character than the others, so that while others might decry the perversion and guilt of military conflict (from an academic and polemical perspective), Radar could respond with a completely innocent character.”
After his role as Radar, Gary Berghoff went on to star in several television series.
Gary Burghoff is the creator of the Chum Magic, a fishing device that attracts schools of fish to the user’s boat. Other creations by Gary Burghoff include a toilet seat lift handle and a variety of unique fishing rods.
