Early life and education
Gavin McInnes was born in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, England, to James McIness and Loraine McIness in July 1970. His parents were very poor while living in England.
Soon after his birth, his family moved to Canada, where his father took a position at the Canadian defense company ‘Kongsberg Geospatial Ltd.,’ formerly known as ‘Gallium Visual Systems Inc.’
His mother was a teacher. Gavin McInnes grew up with his brother.
As a child, he was a class brawler. Gavin McInnes was known as the “class clown” while attending Ottawa schools. This was not approved by his father. As a working-class English father, he wanted his son to prioritize his education.
As a result, Gavin McInnes was placed in specific classes. He later compared his treatment to “life in prison.” Somehow, he graduated from ‘Earl of March High School.’
As a teenager, he developed a passion for music and became a member of the band ‘Anal Chinook’. However, this punk band did not succeed and Gavin pursued his dream of writing. He enrolled at ‘Carleton University’ where he earned a BA in English.
Career
Gavin McInnes first became interested in music as a teenager, and he is best known for being a member of the punk band Anal Chinook. This path proved to be a dead end as the band failed to make it big. This prompted him to devote more time to writing and even study English Literature at Carleton University.
After graduating, the aspiring writer found it difficult to find work, prompting him to join the publication ‘Voice of Montreal’, a government agency tasked solely with providing community services. It was there that he met his colleagues, Suroosh Alvi and Shane Smith, who he later bought the company from in 1994. They eventually renamed the publication ‘Vice’ in 1996, and when government officials threatened to sue them, Gavin McInnes and his colleagues paid them off.
His work in the magazine garnered a lot of attention in the following years, and WNBC radio called him “The Godfather of Hipsterdom.” He has contributed as a regular writer to articles in Vice magazine such as The Vice Guide to Picking Up Chicks and The Vice Guide to Happiness.
Gavin McInnes is also the co-author of two books for the magazine, The Vice Guide to Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll, as well as Vice Do’s and Don’ts: 10 Years of Vice Magazine’s Street Fashion Critiques.
