Russell’s karting journey began in 2006, and by 2009 he had progressed from cadet class to the top. That same year, he achieved the prestigious MSA British and Open Champions titles. His karting success continued as he went on to win various championships, such as the 2012 CIK-FIA European Karting Championship.
Russell entered his first single-seater race in 2014, competing in the Formula Renault 2.0 Alpine Championship. He took three wins during the season and achieved a commendable fourth place in the championship standings. Russell also competed in two rounds of the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup Championship.
Russell entered the 2014 BRDC Formula 4 Championship with reigning champions Lanan Racing. He enjoyed considerable success, winning the championship title with four wins and 12 podiums. As a reward for his outstanding performance, Russell was allowed to test a GP3 car with Arden Motorsport at the prestigious Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi.
