He notably prosecuted Clive Derby-Lewis and Janusz Waluś for their roles in the assassination of anti-apartheid activist Chris Hani in 1993. Nel’s dedication and competence led to his appointment as Gauteng Regional Head of the NPA’s Special Operations Division (Scorpions) business unit, a role he held from its inception in 1999 until its dissolution in 2009. Nel’s diligence earned him respect within the legal community throughout his career.
A prominent figure, Gerrie Nel, played a key role in the prosecution of Jackie Selebi, former national police commissioner and president of Interpol, which led to Selebi’s conviction on corruption charges in 2010. In recognition of his steadfast commitment to justice, the State Bar Association named Nel Prosecutor of the Year in 2012.
In early 2017, an unnamed prosecutor at the NPA chose to resign and then partner with AfriForum. The partnership was aimed at establishing a new private prosecution unit dedicated to serving all South Africans fairly. This envisioned unit was expected to carefully protect the interests of all members of South African society.
