Nathalie Emmanuel was born into a family of mixed heritage. In a July 2011 tweet, she opened up about her heritage, saying that she is “1/2 Dominican, 1/4 Spanish, 1/4 Irish… My dad is 1/2 St. Lucian, 1/2 English.” The actress was born in 1989 in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, England.

The GOT actress also touched on her parents’ heritage in an interview with Byrdie. She shared that her family is “St. Lucian and Dominican—not to be confused with the Dominican Republic.” She added, “My mom is half Dominican, my dad is half St. Lucian, and both of my grandparents came to the U.K.”

When talking about how her family taught her to accept her natural hair as a child, Nathalie said she was “lucky in that regard because both my parents are mixed, and they didn’t have to learn how to control or deal with my hair.”

“I’m so grateful that my mom just taught me to do what she does with her hair,” she continued.

However, she admits that accepting her hair “was a challenge,” especially because as a child she attended a predominantly white school where there were few other families like hers. . When she wore her hair down to school, she was even warned that it was a “health and hygiene issue”.

“But at home it was a different story,” she says. “My mom had big curly hair too, and I always felt empowered to love my hair.”

But having something like, ‘I need to go to the other side of this door and get to my mom.’ They locked the door, they had people standing behind them and almost just using the line ‘I need to get to the person I love or get out of here to get to that person,’ was really helpful. I remember just feeling devastated, absolutely devastated, panicked and terrified. That day we did it. My mom was actually on the other side of it, and I was like, ‘Are you okay?’ afterwards. She was like, ‘Yeah, I don’t like that.’ Didn’t like me screaming like that.”
