Early life and education
Gillon McLachlan was born in 1973 in Adelaide, Australia. He was raised by his parents, Angus McLachlan and Sylvia McLachlan, along with his three siblings: Hamish McLachlan, Banjo McLachlan and Will McLachlan.
After completing his secondary education at St Peter’s College as a boarder, McLachlan went on to obtain a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Adelaide in 1995 and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) at the University of Melbourne in 1996, where he also attended Trinity College.
Career
Gillon McLachlan had a remarkable career at the AFL, serving for 23 years from 2000 to 2023. During this time, he rose through the ranks, starting as a strategic planning advisor and eventually becoming Deputy Chief Executive.
He held a variety of roles and responsibilities, including General Manager Commercial, overseeing broadcast and major projects, and Managing Director, where he managed broadcast, digital media, fixtures and stadium infrastructure.
His dedication and hard work saw him appointed as Deputy CEO in 2012, a position he will hold until his retirement in 2023.
Despite his successes, McLachlan’s tenure as CEO has not been without controversy, with some criticising his leadership and decision-making, particularly in relation to player welfare and integrity.
