early life
Godswill Akpabio was raised by Chief Obote Akpabio and his wife Lucy Obote Akpabio. He was born on December 9, 1962. His father died when he was very young and he was raised by his mother.
Akpabio completed his primary education at the Methodist Primary School, Ukana and his secondary education at the Federal Government College, Port Harcourt before attending the Faculty of Law at the University of Calabar, graduating in 1987.
He graduated from the Lagos Law School in 1988 and was called to the Nigerian Bar the following year.
Profession
After being called to the bar, Akpabio worked briefly as a teacher before becoming a partner at Paul Usoro and Co., a major Nigerian law firm.
He also worked for EMIS Telecoms Limited, a pioneer in the fixed wireless telecommunications industry in Lagos, Nigeria, where he was promoted to Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer in 2002.
In 2002, Akpabio was appointed Commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Resources in Akwa Ibom State and later Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. In 2006, he was also appointed Commissioner for Lands and Housing.
In April 2007, Godswill Akpabio successfully ran for governor of Akwa Ibom State on behalf of the People’s Democratic Party.
Akpabio ran for governor of Akwa Ibom State in the 2011 general election and was re-elected.
After completing his second term, Akpabio contested the April 2015 elections where he contested for the Akwa Ibom Northwest Senate seat and won on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and currently serves as the Senate Minority Leader.

He is a devout Catholic. Godswill is married to FLEI founder Ekaette Unoma Akpabio.
