Godwin Emefiele was born on August 4, 1961 in Lagos, Nigeria.

He studied Banking and Finance at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and graduated in 1984.

He obtained his Master’s degree in Finance from the same school and continued his studies at other schools.

He later became a lecturer at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and the University of Port Harcourt where he taught Finance, Banking Management and Insurance.

He was also a director of ACCION Microfinance Bank Limited. He later became the CEO of Zenith Bank.

He became a popular figure for taking the bank to new heights and was thus appointed as CBN Governor by President Goodluck Jonathan in 2014 and later reappointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019. He is the acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria to date.

Early life

Godwin Emefiele is a Nigerian economist. He was born on 4 August 1964 in Lagos State, Nigeria. He is a native of Ika South, Delta State, Nigeria. He attended Victoria Island Public Primary School in Lagos and graduated in 1978, then he continued his education at Maryland High School in Maryland, Lagos and graduated in 1984.

He then attended the University of Nigeria, Nsukka where he obtained a degree in Banking and Finance and graduated in June 1984. He went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Finance from the same university and graduated in 1986.

Godwin Emefiele started his career after graduating from University. He later became a lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt and the University of Nigeria Nsukka where he taught Finance, Banking Management and Insurance. He is also a Director of ACCION Micro-FinanceBank Ltd.

He then became CEO of Zenith Bank, then promoted to Deputy CEO and then Group CEO.

He was then given the responsibility of overseeing the major branches of Zenith Bank in Lagos and Northern Nigeria. His immense impact transformed the bank into one of the leading Financial Institutions in Africa. As a result, the bank was recognized both locally and internationally.

He was subsequently appointed by President Goodluck Jonathan on 3 June 2014 as the 10th Indigenous Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the 11th Director General of the CBN, thereby succeeding Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. He was subsequently reappointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in May 2019 for a second term.
